Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova completed the career grand slam together as they won their first US Open women’s doubles title as a pairing on Friday.
The top seed fought back from a set down to beat wildcards Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7 6-0 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Victory for the pair followed triumph at Wimbledon in 2024, the Australian Open in 2025 and the French Open earlier this year.
It was a fourth major title for American Townsend and a 12th in doubles for Czech Siniakova, who made history as the first player to complete the career grand slam with two different partners, after she previously did so with compatriot Barbora Krejcikova.
The 2025 runners-up conceded the first set as Siniakova hit three double faults in the final game – the first set they had dropped all tournament.
But the top seeds roared back in the second, winning 23 of 27 points after the first game to force a deciding set, which they also dominated.
Siniakova said: “There was a lot of nerves. We were really fighting for this one, so I’m just really proud. We did it.”
Victory made 30-year-old Siniakova only the eighth woman to win 12 or more major doubles titles in the Open era, while if she finishes the year as world No 1 for the sixth time she would surpass Martina Navratilova for the most seasons ending as the top-ranked player.
It was also an impressive run for Krueger and Montgomery, who respectively rank 570th and 610th in doubles and went through each half of defending champions Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski separately in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
Krueger and Montgomery reunited five years after winning the US Open girls’ doubles title and advancing a round at senior level in 2021. Krueger said: “We put (the wild card) to really good use.”
Townsend and Siniakova got retribution after falling short against Routliffe and Dabrowski in the final a year ago. Townsend dropped to her knees after the final point and was all smiles as she said to Siniakova that they finally did it.
“If flipping the script had a face,”Townsend said, “you’d see my face.”
