1968: Sir Garfield Sobers made cricketing history when he hit six sixes in one over for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan off Malcolm Nash at Swansea.
1969: Former world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano died in a plane crash. He would have been 46 a day later.
2004: Manchester United completed the £27million signing of England striker Wayne Rooney from Everton.
2019: French driver Anthoine Hubert died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash during the Formula Two Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. He was 22.
2021: Cristiano Ronaldo completed a £12.86m move back to Manchester United from Juventus, signing a two-year deal at Old Trafford.
2021: Dame Sarah Storey emulated Mike Kenny’s long-standing national record of 16 Paralympic gold medals by breezing to C5 time trial victory to claim her second title at Tokyo 2020.
