Chelsea struck the first blow
More of the thoughts of Michael Carrick who was asked if Man Utd were negatively affected by the opening goal.
“I don’t think the heads dropped [after conceding the first goal],” he explained.
“There’s no hiding from the fact that we haven’t won enough games. The boys were in a good place in the first half and you could see that in the performance.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a heads drop. I think it gives them [Chelsea] a lift and then makes it harder for us.
“I don’t think we started the second half particularly great. It was a bit scrappy and we didn’t quite get going. They made the first blow of the second half and in the end that went on to make the difference.”

Michael Carrick gives his thoughts
The Manchester United manager spoke to TNT Sports after the game and gave his thoughts on the performance.
He said: “We didn’t really come out, didn’t really get going in the second half. We could have, should have, been up really in the first half.
“I thought everything was as positive as we could have hoped for in the moment and we could have made more chances with bits of final passes. We looked really dangerous, looked in a good place going into half time and found a way of unravelling it in the second half.
“Obviously a bad goal to goal, a penalty and then we’re right up against it at that moment. It’s turned right on its head.”

Mbeumo thinks United had the right ‘mentality’
Did the players let themselves and the manager down today?
Bryan Mbuemo responded: “I think the mentality was there right from the first minute. Harder with 10 men. We still trust everyone. With the men down, we still had some frustrations at the end. But I think we have done everything as a team today.
“Maybe today we just missed some chances. We could have been up early in the game, but that’s a positive to take out of this game.”

Michael Carrick expects to be in charge for Roma game on Tuesday
Michael Carrick expects to still be in charge of Manchester United when they face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday after they “unravelled” to a third consecutive defeat at Chelsea in the Premier League.
United have now gone nine games without a win after Carrick’s players failed to take their chances in an dominant first-half display at Stamford Bridge and fell apart following Morgan Rogers’ stunning goal and Lisandro Martinez’s red card.
Carrick, who refused to say that he was let down by Martinez’s needless sending off, was backed by United’s hierarchy earlier this week and appears committed to fighting on. Asked by TNT Sports if he believes he will be in charge against Roma, Carrick replied: “Yes”.

‘Disappointment’ for United
Manchester United striker Bryan Mbeumo spoke to TNT Sports after the game and explained United’s ‘disappointment’.
“A lot of disappointment,” Mbeumo said. “I think we have done a lot of right things, especially in the first half when we could have been up one or two-nil.
“I think the first half we had a lot of chances, which is a positive. The last few games we didn’t create a lot, but obviously they’re a good team with qualities.
“What we have shown today – the mentality was there. Everyone worked really hard and we still have to find some bits at the training ground. Work even harder and yes we have two very important games.”

Manchester United have picked up just seven points from a possible 27 in the Premier League this season.
They currently sit 16th in the table but could find themselves inside the relegation zone by the end of the weekend’s fixtures.
Possibly even by the end of the day.

More from Morgan Rogers

“It’s a good start but I need to keep going.”

Rogers reflects on his goal
He gave his thoughts on the moment he sent Chelsea into the lead.
Morgan Rogers said: “Just to try and commit the defenders and the gap became a little bit of space and all of a sudden I was in on goal and I just had to stay composed and luckily it went in.
“We need to start halves well and we done it. At half-time today we weren’t really happy with how we played the first half and it was a really consciencous effort to go again.
“It was still 0-0, we will still in the game and I think it showed in the second half that we were right at it.”

Chelsea ‘deserved the win’
Morgan Rogers, the scorer of Chelsea’s first goal and player of the match, spoke to TNT Sports after the game.
“Massive, a difficult week,” he reflected of the result.
“A poor result last weekend and then okay in the cup but not the win that we wanted.
“We knew we had to come out here strong. The first half was tough, they played well and there were chances at either end.
“The second half we really stamped out authority which was good and we deserved the win.”
