
Lenovo rolled Project AeroBlade onto the IFA Berlin floor this week as a ThinkBook-class concept that treats cooling as the last piece of bulk still worth removing. Shown at Innovation World on September 3, the 14-inch machine stays under 10 millimeters thick and under 830 grams, a magnesium-aluminum shell with a high screen-to-body OLED panel, Thunderbolt 4, and Wi-Fi 7. Official copy frames it as full-performance computing for hybrid work, with every part of the board and chassis sized around travel rather than a traditional heat stack.
Project AeroBlade appears to be your typical clamshell laptop, at least until you pick it up. Four Frore Systems AirJet Mini modules sit atop a substantially smaller motherboard. Lenovo has dubbed this layout the Active Flow, and it makes perfect sense given how it replaces those noisy old spinning fans with cutting-edge solid-state components that use tiny piezo membranes vibrating at frequencies far beyond human hearing to suck air in, push it through high-velocity pulses, and then blow it across a copper layer on the chip, where the heat simply disappears. There is no need for a large vent at the bottom of the case here. As you open the hinge slightly, some air will come in from the room.

The four AirJet Minis that Lenovo and Frore are currently working on can remove heat at a rate of about 30 watts, with each module measuring 27 by 41.5 by 2.65 millimeters and drawing roughly a watt of power. To put that into context, they’re creating a back pressure of around 2,000 pascals, which is roughly ten times the pressure of a standard laptop fan. It’s no surprise, then, that both Lenovo and Frore make such a big deal about dust resistance and lower air intake when compared to typical fans.

As you would expect from a hands-on experience on the exhibit floor, the first thing you’ll notice is how quiet and chilly it is. That’s the holy grail of passive fanless notebooks, yet Active Flow doesn’t sacrifice power for silence. Frore claims that the Mini module has an in-system noise level of only 21 dBA. According to Lenovo, the cooling draw is comparable to that of a standard fan, with the added benefit of keeping all of the dust and moisture associated with those large grilles outside. Whether that holds up after months of being placed in a bag with all of the lint and coffee shop air that comes with it remains to be seen, but it is a question that hangs over all of these concepts.

The Core Ultra 200 series, which powers this prototype, features Intel’s Lunar Lake silicon. The published specs for this particular generation of chips tell us that they are meant to be good for anything between 17 and 30 watts of thermal design power, a range that makes it look like the four Mini modules are going to be more beneficial than a single small cooler could ever hope to be. To be honest, it’s more likely that real-world operation is around 20 watts than anything else. According to Lenovo’s communications team, if a production model is ever released, it will most likely use a newer Intel part, as revealed in some behind-the-scenes briefings.

The four USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 are one of the features that truly make the side panels useful, since they are ideal for connecting docks and displays. This product covers the wireless side with Wi-Fi 7. That port combination is actually quite crucial, because the Lunar Lake still includes full Thunderbolt as standard, which is unfortunately missing from some thinner Intel products that have had to rely on the generic 10-gigabit USB-C instead.
