JerryRigEverything Puts Apple’s iPhone Duo Through Brutal Durability Gauntlet and Finds Critical Flaws

Apple iPhone Duo Durability Test
Zach Nelson of JerryRigEverything wasted little time putting Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, through the usual sequence of scratches, flames, dust, and bends the day after it went on sale. Outer glass held up in familiar fashion. Ceramic Shield 2 on the front panel showed only the faintest marks once the Mohs hardness picks reached level seven, with deeper grooves appearing at level eight, matching what earlier iPhones have delivered.

The phone’s rear glass behaved about as predicted, given the first round of testing with various tools. The inner display, however, offered a quite different story than the first pass with the testers. The soft polymer surface on the inside display scratched at level two right away, as one would anticipate from a folding phone. A fingernail scratched it just like every other folding phone we’ve seen, no surprises there.

The matte nano-texture coating did a good job of covering the blemishes, especially after you turned on the screen and the center seam faded away. Apple’s panel contains numerous ultra-thin layers, including two flexible glass sheets beneath the textured top finish. The top layer continued to be the weakest link in terms of everyday resilience, as keys, coins, and chain mail would leave deep grooves that even isopropyl alcohol couldn’t remove.

Heat revealed another issue: the distance between the two screens. The inner 7.6-inch panel began to heat up after around 10 seconds of exposure to a milder flame, however the smaller outside display absorbed the same flame for more than twenty seconds before any long-term damage was visible. The glass on the outside appeared to assist diffuse the heat slightly, while the soft inner layers struggled to cope. Nelson claims the nano-texture layer can be peeled away, but he suspects Apple was treating it as a structural part of the screen, and if the pixels underneath fail (which, of course, is exactly what would happen), they charge you $1,000 for a full inner display replacement, which seems far too steep to me.

Dust was the first significant functional failure to occur. The Duo is rated IP68 by Apple, which means it should be water and dust resistant, but Nelson discovered that the magnets on the back soon collected grit when he threw it in the sand and mud to see what happened. When particles got into the hinge, the magnets lost enough force to close the two halves, so the phone became stuck open. It appeared that the grit was entering through the hinge mechanism, rather than the screen borders or even the frame seals. Nelson has been testing folding phones for seven years, and he has observed Samsung models that appear to keep their hinges cleaner under similar conditions.

Bending finished the job. When Nelson applied pressure across the middle, the open device flexed more than he had expected. However, the titanium frame and body remained intact during the first pass. The inner screen, on the other hand, did not; instead, a persistent green line appeared from the center fold all the way out to the frame, followed by two more lines from the second bend. The hinge provided just enough movement for the flexible panel to sustain permanent damage.

At that point, the Duo’s entire inner display went dead. Nelson has never encountered this identical failure on a Samsung foldable throughout the same test, with the exception of one extremely large trifold that received a pass because to its size. Either there was dust inside the hinge, or it was not rigid enough. Regardless, the Duo had no chance. Sitting on the open Duo in a back pocket would very likely yield the same result, as well as the same $1,000 repair expense. The outer screen and frame fared better than the folding part of the phone, but daily care is still required, more so than on a standard iPhone.
