Jamie O’Hara branded Diogo Dalot ‘atrocious’ after Manchester United’s incredible comeback win over Roma in the Champions League.

Michael Carrick’s struggling side came from 2-0 down to clinch an unlikely 3-2 win over Serie A side Roma at Old Trafford.

Manchester United, enduring their worst start to a season since the 1980s, went behind after just 11 minutes as Matias Soule took advantage of space left by the absent Dalot to fire past Senne Lammens.

Dalot was out of position again five minutes later as Ayden Heaven blocked a shot with his arm to give Roma a penalty which was converted by Donyell Malen.

The home side were once again booed off and Michael Carrick was surely heading for the sack until United produced a brilliant second-half comeback.

Bruno Fernandes got the Red Devils back in the game with a retaken penalty won by Matheus Cunha, who then scored two late goals to stun the Italians and spark bedlam at Old Trafford.

O’Hara praised Manchester United’s unlikely comeback but said the team were ‘pathetic’ in the first-half and was particularly critical of ‘atrocious’ Portugal international Dalot.

‘We were watching the Manchester United game and the first-half was pathetic, we were in shock at how bad they were,’ O’Hara said on talkSPORT.

‘They could have been 4-0 down. But in the second half they turned it around and they were fantastic, they put in a big performance in the end.

‘But they were pathetic in the first-half, it was so open and they stopped running, they had given up. They were gone, they were done.

‘Roma should have absolutely buried them but they didn’t. They were all over the place at the back. Dalot… oh my god.

‘I said during the first-half, they have to take him off, he was atrocious. I don’t know what he was doing, I don’t know. It was awful defending, it was so bad. I couldn’t believe how bad they were.’

Carrick praised his players for their response in the second-half and urged them to take that momentum into United’s dismal Premier League campaign.

Manchester United are just 17th in the top-flight, two points above bottom-placed Sunderland, ahead of Sunday’s clash against Aston Villa.

‘It was a good night,’ Carrick told Amazon Prime. ‘I have to give credit to the players, I think we grew into it after giving the goals away.

‘The boys made every little bit of every opportunity. We were brilliant in the end. It’s one game though, it depends what happens next and we have to show that.

‘It’s a win for us as a football club and we get to send the fans home happy. We have to make the most of it. I don’t have a crystal ball to know what happens next.

‘We move on to the weekend. We’ve got a really important game here against Aston Villa, which we need to prepare for right.’

Meanwhile, Manchester United captain Fernandes said the win was not about saving Carrick his job.

‘We don’t need to save anyone’s job,’ he insisted. ‘The club needed that win, the players needed that win.

‘We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together. It’s been tough but it doesn’t change the belief I have of the manager and the staff and every player in this club.

‘It doesn’t change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me.’

United’s next opponents Aston Villa are 10th in the Premier League and lost 3-0 to Champions League contenders Barcelona on Tuesday night.
