Electra EL2 Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator Completes First Fixed Wing Takeoff and Landing at Manhattan Heliport

Electra EL2 Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Takeoff Landing Manhattan
On the morning of October 26, 2026, Electra’s yellow two-seat EL2 hybrid-electric demonstrator rolled onto the pad at Downtown Skyport on Pier 6 in the East River and lifted off again after a brief ground run, the first time a fixed-wing airplane without any ability to hover had operated from that Lower Manhattan heliport. The 62-by-62-foot landing area sits on a roughly 300-foot barge that has served helicopters since 1960. Conventional airplanes need far more pavement, so the site had remained off-limits to them. Electra’s team treated the existing surface as sufficient.

Eight electric motors spin propellers located along the front edge of the wing to get things moving. As they push huge slabs of air at those large flaps, which can lower by up to 70 degrees, the flow accelerates, multiplying lift significantly, allowing the EL2 to take to the air and eventually land at speeds of around 30 to 35 knots. Early flight testing revealed it could get off the ground in under 170 feet and land in as little as 114 feet, though Electra expects the production version to handle that a little better, at around 150 feet. At the Manhattan dock, the pilot barely needed any runway at all. Once the plane is out of the water, the flaps retract and the aircraft enters a normal cruising mode, with the traditional wing and tail taking control.

A small turbine generator, taken from a helicopter’s auxiliary power unit and capable of producing 150 to 200 horsepower, sits in the plane’s nose and charges batteries stored beneath the cabin floor. Those eight motors draw power from those batteries during the most intense moments of takeoff and landing. Once in cruise mode, the turbine can simply keep the batteries charged or even power the motors directly. If the turbine fails, the plane can continue flying on the batteries alone, or if the batteries decide to bail, the turbine can keep the thing airborne. That’s a very impressive trick for a small plane, and this level of redundancy is a pretty rare thing to see.

Noise levels observed in previous tests were rather quiet, around 75 decibels at 300 feet, which is virtually as quiet as the hum of the East River shoreline. Company CEO Marc Allen believes this trip was a milestone in the aviation industry, noting that no new runways were developed for the occasion. Skyports Infrastructure, the company that operates Downtown Skyport, stated that these landing pads can now accommodate a variety of flights, not only helicopter journeys, and that passengers and freight can now travel to locations far beyond the regular helicopter range.

This was all part of Electra’s Life Beyond Runways exhibition, which featured a two-week tour flying across the area, stopping in Downtown Charleston, Atlantic City, Watertown International Airport, and even the Snowshoe Mountain Resort. Oh, and don’t forget when they flew helicopter-style instrument procedures from helipads at commercial airports as part of the FAA’s advanced air mobility pilot program.

The EL2, also known as the Goldfinch, grafts the Cessna 172 wing onto a totally new fuselage, complete with a T-tail for good measure. It made its first flight on battery power in November 2023, and later that month, it flew in hybrid form. The airplane itself weighs a respectable 3,100 pounds. The team’s time and effort on the EL2 is eventually focused at delivering the nine-passenger EL9, which will be certified under Part 23 rules. The larger aircraft is projected to have the same 150-foot takeoff and landing standards, cruise at a comfortable 175 mph, and provide around 1,100 nautical miles of ferry range, with reserves yet to be factored in.

Electra believes the concept will be able to tote a weight nearly 2.5 times the standard for helicopters and electric vertical takeoff aircraft, while providing a tenfold improvement in range and lowering operating costs by approximately 70%. To date, the team has received over 2,200 letters of intent from more than 60 commercial operators. The EL9 is expected to make its first flight in late 2027 or early 2028, with service starting around 2030 at their Ohio Springfield plant.
