Australia break Aiden Markram resistance to wrap up first Test victory against South Africa

Josh Hazlewood picked up a six-wicket haul to power Australia to a 214-run victory in the first Test against South Africa.

Aiden Markram tried his best to lead a rearguard defence in Durban, making 75 across six hours and 237 balls, but was ninth man out as the tourists broke through.

The Proteas resumed on 102 for four and almost managed a wicketless first session as Markram and Wiaan Mulder dug deep. Hazlewood, who took out both openers on the fourth evening, made the all-important breakthrough when he had Mulder well caught by Alex Carey down the leg side.

Player-of-the-match Matt Renshaw then had Kyle Verreynne caught behind, a second wicket to go with his 272 runs in a superlative individual performance, as Australia tightened their grip.

Hazlewood continued to push South Africa to the precipice, removing Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer before finishing them off for 206 with the wicket of Anrich Nortje. Markram survived his challenge but was eventually undone when he nicked Mitchell Starc behind.

The three-Test series continues in Gqeberha, also known as Port Elizabeth, from 18 October, before concluding at Newlands in Cape Town later in the month.
