The 2026 NFL season begins on Wednesday with a rematch of the Super Bowl, launching an unpredictable race for the championship featuring a record nine international fixtures played across four continents before concluding on Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles.
An offseason filled with extensive roster overhauls, coaching adjustments, and shifting title odds has left the path to Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium on February 14 wide open and difficult to predict.
The Seattle Seahawks will launch the 2026 campaign by raising their championship banner before facing the New England Patriots, marking the league’s first Wednesday opening game since the 2012 season.
This unusual scheduling clears the runway for the NFL’s most ambitious international push yet.
The NFL’s slate of international fixtures this season will span seven nations and eight venues, starting Friday in Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where the San Francisco 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams in the league’s inaugural regular-season game Down Under.
From there, the global tour heads to Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium for a matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, followed by three games in London and stops in Paris, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City.
Major roster shifts across the league
Significant turnover has swept through the league since Seattle relied on a dominant defensive performance to secure the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy in February.
Already viewed as title favorites, the Los Angeles Rams took an even bolder approach. A marquee trade brought Myles Garrett from Cleveland in exchange for Jared Verse and multiple draft selections, reinforcing belief in LA’s championship aspirations. Aaron Donald subsequently ended his short-lived retirement to rejoin the squad he guided to a title in 2022.
Meanwhile, New England – which served as the league’s model of parity after surging from the bottom of the AFC East to the Super Bowl in a single year – added further offensive firepower by trading for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.
While Seattle returns largely intact in its quest to repeat, their title defense includes questions in the backfield after Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III departed for Kansas City in free agency.
The Kansas City Chiefs enter the campaign surrounded by uncertainty, primarily regarding how quarterback Patrick Mahomes will perform upon returning from a season-ending ACL tear sustained in his left knee last December.
Mahomes, who previously guided Kansas City to three Super Bowl crowns over a five-year stretch, did not play in any preseason matchups as a safety measure but appears ready for their September 14 opener against the Denver Broncos.
Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy said he held no doubts regarding Mahomes’s return, adding that his teammate’s relentless focus throughout the recovery process stood out.
“His grind, his will and want-to is beyond anybody I’ve ever seen,” said Worthy. “Whatever he puts his mind to, that’s what he’s going to do. He kind of leads the team in that way.”
Significant attention has surrounded top overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza in Las Vegas, but the rookie’s regular-season debut will have to wait after the Raiders named veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins as their starter under center.
New head coaches take to the sidelines
Sidelines underwent just as much transition as playing lists. A record-tying 10 franchises appointed new head coaches during the offseason, with six earning their first opportunity in the role.
Among the first-time leaders, Jesse Minter inherits a talented Baltimore Ravens roster centered around two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, while the Buffalo Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to replace Sean McDermott following years of postseason frustration.
Few storylines illustrate the league’s combination of youth and longevity quite like Pittsburgh’s. Four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, who at 42 is the league’s oldest player, returns for his 22nd season to reunite with new head coach Mike McCarthy – the duo previously won a Super Bowl together with the Green Bay Packers in February 2011.
Former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who stepped down in January after 19 seasons at the helm, believes the veteran pairing has the potential to surprise rival teams.
“I think that’s the only reason Aaron comes back. He believes it, I believe it. I don’t think he comes back if he doesn’t believe that,” Tomlin said on “The Rich Eisen Show”.
“They’re probably not being talked about in the ways that some others are being talked about, but that can be a good motivator and a catalyst for them as well. I think they got high expectations, and I think they should have high expectations.”
