LeBron James is set to headline the NBA’s marquee dates after joining the Philadelphia 76ers, starting with an opening night matchup against the New York Knicks followed by a Christmas Day showdown with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The arrival of James has transformed Philadelphia into prime-time viewing, ensuring the team is featured prominently across the league’s flagship broadcasts.
His 76ers debut will take place on October 20 at Madison Square Garden against the NBA champion Knicks. The game forms part of an opening night tripleheader that will see New York raise a banner to honor its first championship since 1973, while James begins the final chapter of his basketball career.
On Christmas Day, James will return to Los Angeles to face the Lakers. That matchup is embedded in a five-game slate that opens in New York, where Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs feature in an NBA Finals rematch.
The league provided a “sneak peek” of its 2026-27 slate on Tuesday morning ahead of the full schedule release scheduled for Thursday.
Action begins with an unusual 3 pm EDT midweek game between the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons. The tripleheader concludes with San Antonio hosting Oklahoma City in a rematch of the Western Conference finals.
NBC will broadcast all three opening-night fixtures — expanding on the two-game format typically used in recent years — before ESPN airs the complete five-game lineup on Christmas.
The Christmas schedule consists of San Antonio at New York, Miami at Boston, Philadelphia at Los Angeles, Oklahoma City at Minnesota, and Denver at Golden State.
Constructing the schedule had presented a challenge for league officials while waiting on James’ decision. Commissioner Adam Silver noted last month that he had urged James to announce his destination due to constant inquiries from franchises and television partners.
James revealed his choice to sign with Philadelphia roughly a week later, pairing with All-Star Jaylen Brown — who was acquired from Boston — to position the 76ers among the chief contenders to dethrone New York.
His home debut in Philadelphia is set for October 22 against Cleveland, one of his former clubs that had pursued a third stint with the forward. That contest will lead off an ESPN doubleheader ahead of Denver visiting Oklahoma City.
