Toyota’s Snowhunter Concept Family Brings Tracked Winter Capability to Five Models at SEMA

Toyota Snowhunter Concept Tracked Tundra 4 Runner Tacoma
Toyota’s CALTY design team in Ann Arbor built a family of five concepts that turn ordinary body-on-frame trucks and SUVs into machines meant for deep, unplowed snow. The Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia each lose their tires and gain large white powder-coated track assemblies that bolt onto the existing hubs.

The one thing these tracks accomplish is spread the vehicle’s weight across a long, flat rubber surface, allowing trucks and SUVs to ride on top of the snow rather than sink under it. Each track contains an internal gear reduction, which minimizes stress on the factory axles, differentials, and transmissions. Brackets are then employed to secure the track assemblies to the steering knuckles and control arms, preventing the tracks from slipping out of alignment even under considerable power. To ensure that they clear the tall track units, you can purchase a Toyota Genuine Parts or TRD raise kit for the suspension.

A number of characteristics are shared across the portfolio, such as a digital camouflage design with a gray and white color scheme, gloss black accents, Rigid Industries LED light pods underneath, hefty aluminum skid plates, and heavy steel rock rails. The five all retain their conventional powertrains, though, as these are non-street-legal prototypes to be displayed at the 2026 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The good news is that with the correct tools, switching the tracks back to wheels in a shop should take only a few hours. However, the weight of each assembly, which ranges from 150 to 180 pounds, makes it extremely impracticable to do so in the field.

The Tundra Snowhunter doubles as a mobile base camp and comes equipped with the TrailLift Pro Rack System, which is a flexible bed frame with a lower top section that makes it easier to carry long or heavy things such as kayaks, bikes, and skis. It also includes TRD rear control arms and Predator steps to further its versatility. The Tacoma Snowhunter is designed to tackle narrower snow tracks, and it includes a roof rack, a bed rack with MOLLE panels, and an awning, as well as dedicated recovery gear and extra lights in the bed, allowing a small crew to continue on tight routes even when the weather turns bad.

The 4Runner Snowhunter features rock rails, a Prinsu roof rack with accessory panels, and a Thule Pulse cargo box for longer journeys into the cold wilderness. The Land Cruiser Snowhunter gets the same rock rails and skid plates, as well as a Thule SnowPack ski rack, adding to its reputation for tackling even the most difficult, remote routes. The Sequoia Snowhunter retains all of its passenger and cargo space while adding a TRD front skid plate, Prinsu running boards, a roof rack, and an additional Thule cargo box.

These concepts demonstrate how simple it is to integrate winter hardware into Toyota’s existing platforms without having to reinvent the vehicle from scratch. Some of their SEMA display designs have previously influenced production trims, so this Snowhunter lot demonstrates the type of extreme snow capability that can be obtained by fitting out trucks and SUVs already in the lineup.
