- Libertango (Keeneland, 18.55) – 1pt win @ 7/4 (bet365)
- Voyager (Keeneland, 19.35) – 1pt each-way @ 20/1 (bet365)
- Sun Goddess (Keeneland, 20.15) – 3pts win @ 8/11 (William Hill)
- Folsom Blues (Keeneland, 21.35) – 1pt win @ 4/1 (William Hill)
In a change to the norm, we are heading across the Atlantic to Kentucky for a look at the opening day of the 2026 Breeders’ Cup. There are 10 races in total on Friday, including five Grade 1s, and my Breeders Cup tips takes in four of those top level contests.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade 1) (18.55, Keeneland)
This looks to be a wonderful opportunity to get the meeting underway with a British success in the form of LIBERTANGO.
The George Boughey-trained filly has enjoyed a superb season, winning the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, going close in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket, before winning at that level in the Lowther at York’s August meeting.
She stepped up on all of that when she bumped into a high-class opponent in Sun Goddess (runs in the 20.15 on this card) in last month’s Group 1 at Cheveley Park and that exceptional effort has seen her put in as the favourite on UK betting sites for her first Stateside foray.
Her closest market rival, Brickyard Belle, is 2-2 and ran on well to win a Grade 3 in fine style last time. She looks very much an improver and is not dismissed lightly, while Force Noir could also pose a major threat to the selection, having been a 28-1 second in last month’s Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.
Mussab represents the Fahey stable and is another British challenger who can’t be ruled out, but if consistency is worth anything, then Libertango should receive due reward for how she’s gone about her business in 2026.
Breeders Cup tip 1: Libertango – 1pt win @ 7/4 (bet365)
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) (19.35, Keeneland)
You’d have to say that the latest effort by ante-post favourite Miss Monica was breathtaking. Bob Baffert’s filly trounced a Del Mar Grade 1 field by more than 6L, over a trip of just 7f and gave the impression she’d have won by a fair bit further had they been racing over 1m.
She gets that opportunity here but it’s hard to believe she won’t be odds-on with most horse racing betting sites based on the visuals of those efforts. Perhaps only Emphatic, who is also a Grade 1 winner and who has lived up to her name in a couple of her three wins, can challenge her in terms of the market.
The latter’s C&D success in the Alcibiades Stakes earlier this month is probably at least as good as anything the favourite has achieved and there’s no reason why she can’t improve significantly again. A win would be no great surprise.
However, in terms of value, I am going to offer up VOYAGER as an each-way suggestion. Trainer Mark Casse has enjoyed plenty of big race success and he’s got this daughter of Justify to improve with all three starts so far, culminating in success in the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine (1m, firm) last month.
He’s given her around six weeks since that outing before bringing her here and that form was not far short of the likely favourite Miss Monica’s latest win, if nowhere near as eye-catching. However, at 20/1 (at the time of writing), she looks way overpriced and there is also no reason why she can’t take another leap forward herself. I think she represents some each-way value.
Breeders Cup tip 2: Voyager – 1pt each-way @ 20/1 (bet365)
John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Grade 1) (20.15, Keeneland)
A win for Libertango earlier on the card would be a big boost to the already major chance of SUN GODDESS here.
Aidan O’Brien has an enviable Breeders’ Cup record and this daughter of Sioux Nation really ought to be his first winner at this year’s meeting. Beaten only on her Naas debut and in Royal Ascot’s Group 3 Albany Stakes by Libertango, she’s won six of her eight starts, including the last five in succession over 6f-7f, three of those being at elite level.
For all the 1L winning margin in the Cheveley Park last time, she won going away and having dotted up in the Moyglare Stud Stakes over the Curragh’s 7f trip prior to that, she gives the impression that this step up in trip is simply a natural progression. It will be a surprise if anything lowers her colours.
Amusingly looks to be a filly with a future and could make a race of it, while another tough opponent could come from within the family, as it were, via Joseph O’Brien-trained Green Empress.
Breeders Cup tip 3: Sun Goddess – 3pts win @ 8/11 (William Hill)
Brown Advisory Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Grade 1) (21.35, Keeneland)
This looks the trickiest race to solve on the first day of the meeting, with three O’Brien-trained runners towards the head of the market on betting apps.
FOLSOM BLUES (Joseph), Great Barrier Reef and Haffner (both Aidan) are those three runners and the first-named is just preferred. Although Haffner was thrashed by the selection when they met in the Group 1 National Stakes (7f, yielding) at the Curragh last month, that was clearly not the former’s true running.
He was a drifter that day, and the market also got it right in the Group 2 Royal Lodge at Newmarket last time (1m, good to firm), because he was a well-backed favourite and duly obliged, despite being keen.
He doesn’t have a huge amount to find with Folsom Blues if at his best but Joseph O’Brien’s Blue Point colt has been thoroughly consistent, hitting his peak in the aforementioned National Stakes, which he won by 6L.
It’s hard to be too critical of his odds-on defeat by Amusingly in a Longchamp Group 1 last time out and I think that, while he’s definitely got speed, he gives the impression he’ll get a mile. Fast ground should also help him on that score. A big run by Amusingly earlier on the card will also be a boost for his chance.
Great Barrier Reef won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, completing a hat-trick in the process. He’s continued to progress in defeat and bumped into a very good one in stablemate Darkness Falls in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes last time.
If Folsom Blues runs to form, then Ryan Moore’s mount will need to improve going on for 6lb to beat him. There’s a chance that could happen, now he’s up again in trip and he’s not ruled out.
How’s Al Today leads the home challenge and, after a decisive Listed win last time, is making good strides forward. He’s not written off.
Breeders Cup tip 4: Folsom Blues – 1pt win @ 4/1 (William Hill)
Responsible gambling
If you’re having a bet on the Breeders’ Cup, it’s vital to practice responsible gambling.
Betting can be addictive, and it’s important to stay in control of your gambling. Never treat gambling as a way to make money, never bet more than you can afford and when the fun stops, stop.
UK gambling sites offer punters tools, like deposit limits, profit and loss trackers and self-exclusion options, to help you stay in control.
But if you ever feel like you need help or advice on gambling addiction, don’t hesitate to contact one of the charities or organisations below.
